Porcine Brain Neuropeptide Complex
Cerebrolysin is a mixture of low-molecular-weight neuropeptides and free amino acids derived from purified porcine brain protein via standardised enzymatic hydrolysis. The active fraction (approximately 25% of total) comprises peptide fragments of 1-10 kDa that cross the blood-brain barrier. Approved in Russia, China, Austria, and other countries for ischaemic stroke, TBI, and vascular dementia under the trade name Cerebrolysin (EVER Neuro Pharma).
The active neuropeptide fractions of Cerebrolysin mimic BDNF, CNTF, NGF, and GDNF (neurotrophic factors) and activate their corresponding tyrosine kinase receptors (TrkB, TrkA, Ret/GFRα). This promotes neuronal survival, synaptic plasticity, and hippocampal neurogenesis. Additional mechanisms include reduction of beta-amyloid precursor protein (APP) processing, inhibition of calpain-mediated neurodegeneration, modulation of AMPA receptor expression, and attenuation of excitotoxic calcium influx.
Clinical data documents benefit in acute ischaemic stroke recovery (PASS and CASTA trials), traumatic brain injury, and vascular dementia. Alzheimer's disease trials (ADAScog studies) showed significant cognitive improvement versus placebo. Cerebrolysin is also studied in Parkinson's disease (neuroprotective) and as part of cognitive rehabilitation protocols following brain injury.
