Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide analog of tuftsin studied in preclinical and clinical research for its anxiolytic and nootropic properties. Research has examined its potential to alleviate anxiety and stress, regulate emotional balance, reduce depressive symptoms, and improve memory and attention including in age-related cognitive impairment. Studies have also explored its immune-modulating properties and enhanced antiviral capabilities.

Selank
Selank (TP-7) is a synthetic heptapeptide (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) derived from the endogenous tetrapeptide tuftsin, with a Pro-Gly-Pro extension for metabolic stability. Developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, it is approved in Russia as an anxiolytic medication. Its profile is distinct from classical anxiolytics โ it shows anxiolytic activity without sedation, dependence, or withdrawal effects in reported studies.
Selank's anxiolytic effects involve modulation of the GABA-A receptor system, although it does not bind directly to the benzodiazepine site. It also inhibits enkephalinase activity โ the enzyme responsible for degrading endogenous enkephalins โ effectively extending their anxiolytic duration. Selank upregulates BDNF expression in hippocampal tissue and modulates IL-6 and other cytokines, linking its nootropic and immunomodulatory properties.
Russian-language clinical studies describe Selank's efficacy in generalised anxiety disorder, phobic disorder, and asthenic conditions. Nootropic applications studied include working memory improvement and stress-resilience enhancement. Immune-modulating properties have been investigated in models of viral infection and immune deficiency states. NA-Selank (N-acetyl Selank) is a variant with modified N-terminal acylation studied for enhanced nasal bioavailability.
